The Willman Building

Jamon Sellman purchased the property for $255,000, with architect Sarah Mackert presenting the plans. The project aims to secure state grants, including the JobsOhio Vibrant Communities Program and the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program. Plans include nine residential units on the upper floors and a co-working space on the ground floor to foster local entrepreneurship. The redevelopment will also feature a new elevator and efforts to preserve the vintage neon Willman sign.

A building rich with history…

The site at 215 North Main Street in downtown Urbana, Ohio, holds a rich tapestry of history that spans more than a century, reflecting the vibrant commercial spirit of the city. First established in 1893 as home to Wilson & Callahan, a beloved local bookstore, the building soon evolved into a cornerstone for a variety of businesses.

In 1897, H.M. Annat took over, transforming the space into a bustling dry goods store, catering to the town’s growing needs. By 1918, C.L. Wendler & J.S. Ewing introduced a furniture store, marking the beginning of the site's long-standing connection with home furnishings.

The tradition continued when Hamlin Furniture Store occupied the location in 1925, and again in 1929, offering quality goods for local residents. In 1937, the furniture legacy was passed to Wilman’s Furniture Store, with B.H. Willmanserving as proprietor. Under his leadership, the business thrived, remaining a fixture of Urbana for over five decades, with records showing its presence in 1937, 1939, 1948, 1960, and as late as 1988.

From books to dry goods, and eventually furniture, 215 North Main Street stands as a testament to Urbana’s evolving commercial history, preserving the legacy of family-owned businesses that have shaped the community.
